Post Extraction Care Instructions

After your dental extraction, it’s important to follow these care instructions to ensure proper healing and minimize complications.

Bite Down

Bite down on a gauze pad immediately after your extraction. Keep the gauze in place for 20 minutes, then discard it. If bleeding persists, replace the gauze and maintain pressure for another 30 minutes or until bleeding stops.

Clotting

To promote clotting, avoid spitting for 24 hours. Instead, swallow saliva and blood. Refrain from strenuous exercise, smoking, and sucking through a straw during this time.

Pain & Discomfort

Take any prescribed medications as directed. Stay hydrated and eat soft foods when you feel ready. Chew on the opposite side of your mouth. Avoid alcoholic beverages and hot or spicy foods.

Salt Water Rinse

Starting the day after your extraction, rinse gently with warm salt water (1 tablespoon of salt in 1 cup of warm water) three times a day for the next 48 hours. Let the water fall from your mouth instead of spitting. Rinse gently after meals to keep food out of the extraction site.

Dry Socket

If you experience increased pain after a few days, you may have developed a dry socket. In this case, please return to our office for treatment.
